Fairview Celebrates Black History Month

Fairview Missionary Baptist Church invites the community to be a part of its Black History Month activities.  The theme is “Celebrating Our Past - Committed to Our Future.”
 
The schedule was headlined on February 5 by Senior Pastor John Reed’s profound sermon on “Guidelines for Victorious Christian Living,” I Peter 5.  The day was designated Patricia F. Reed Red Heart Day, in recognition of “Go Red for Women.”  
 
Sunday, February 12, is Langston University Day and Scholarship Sunday.  Langston University is the only historically black university (HBCU) in the state of Oklahoma.   University President Dr. Kent J. Smith, Jr., Langston faculty and staff, the University choir, along with the entire Langston community, will be worshipping at Fairview on this day.  Dr. Smith will deliver greetings and the choir will sing.  

This Sunday is also used to encourage donations to the John A. and Patricia Reed Scholarship Fund, a fund that assists students that are enrolled in a recognized school of higher education, post high school.  Donations can be made online.

The speaker for 10:00 a.m. morning worship will be Attorney Erick W. Harris.  Erick is a member of Fairview Missionary Baptist Church where he serves as a Deacon, a Trustee and as Director of the church’s Black History Ministry.   Erick received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Tuskegee University and a Master of Public Administration degree from the University of Oklahoma.  He is a graduate of the University of Oklahoma College of Law.  Attorney Harris is licensed to practice law in all state courts in Oklahoma and is a member of the Oklahoma Bar Association.

View Sundays, a special 2nd Sunday evening contemporary worship period hosted by the Young Adult, Youth and Children Ministries of Fairview, will be Sunday night, the 12th of February, at 6:00 p.m.  Rev. Stephen T. Ivey, Assistant Pastor of St. John Baptist Church, Tulsa, will be the preacher for the service.  Rev. Ivey is C.E.O. and founder of Ivey League Enterprises, LLC.  Langston University Choir will sing and other worship and praise expressions will be presented.

Wednesday night, February 15, is Family Movie Night.  The free showing of the movie, Selma, will be shown in the church’s Donald Burns Fellowship Hall, beginning at 7:00 p.m.  Refreshments will be provided.

February 19 is Old School Sunday.  The worship service will be reminiscent of past days at Fairview.  The sermon will be by Dr. Reed, 54-year veteran Pastor at Fairview.

The schedule will end on February 26.  The Sunday School Drama Ministry will present its Black History Program at 9:00 a.m.  Dr. J. Weldon Gilbert, Pastor of the St. John’s Missionary Baptist Church, Lawton, Oklahoma, will be the guest preacher for 10:00 a.m. worship. 

Dr. Gilbert, a native of Houston, Texas, attended Bishop College in Dallas, Texas.  He received a BA in Business Administration and Management from Prairie View A&M University, a Master of Divinity from Virginia Union University School of Theology, and a Doctor of Ministry from United Theology Seminary, Dayton, Ohio. 

The John A. Reed, Jr. Spirit of the Community Awards will be presented at the end of the morning worship period.  The “Spirit of the Community Award” was created by Dr. John A. Reed, Jr., Senior Pastor of Fairview, as a way to recognize citizens who have gone above the call of duty by volunteering their time and resources for the betterment of the community.  An honorees’ reception will follow.
