OKLAHOMA CITY STREET NAMED FOR PRESIDENT REED

On Monday, July 17, 2006, representatives from the City of Oklahoma City officially changed a section of what was formerly North Missouri to bear the name of long-time Pastor of Fairview Baptist Church and President of Oklahoma Baptist State Convention, Dr. John A. Reed, Jr.

Members and friends of Fairview gathered at the corner of N. E. 7th and Missouri to witness a long-standing landmark being removed to make room for this great leader to take his rightful place in history.  The street sign of Missouri came down as Rev. J. A. Reed Jr. Avenue went up.  The newly named section begins with the 500 block and ends at N. E. 8th Street and forms an eastern border to the church’s main parking lot, property owned by Fairview and secured and developed under the pastoral leadership of Rev. Reed.

The idea to rename the street in his honor originated with the youngest daughter of Pastor Reed & Sister Pat Fisher Reed, Johnneese Reed Walter.  Johnneese took the idea to the appropriate city officials and her idea germinated from seed to reality.  Councilwoman Willa Johnson presented the proposal to the City’s Planning Commission where, with vigilant scrutiny, it was approved.  Because of the leadership he has given and the contribution that Dr. Reed has made to the citizens of Greater Oklahoma City, the state and nation, the proposal and its supporting justification passed the City Council with a unanimous vote of its members.

Members and friends of Fairview Baptist Church gathered immediately following 10:00 a.m. Morning Worship on Sunday, August 6, to dedicate Rev. J. A. Reed Jr. Avenue.  The ceremony included brief remarks from Pastor Reed, remarks from Former Oklahoma Governor George Nigh and a dedicatory prayer by Rev. John Holmes, Associate Minister at Fairview.

Dr. Reed has served as Pastor of Fairview for over 43 years.  The members of Fairview thank God for the steadfast love and leadership of Pastor Reed and congratulate him upon his receipt of this commendable and deserving tribute.
