Fairview Celebrate Black History Month

Legendary African American Leaders Recognized

Fairview Missionary Baptist Church will celebrate Black History Month through a series of events that the entire community is invited to attend.  Included in the lineup of activities is a tribute to living legends. 
 
The Children/Youth Ministry and the Drama Ministry will perform Black History re-enactments on the 3rd Sunday of the month, February 20, 2011, during the 10:00am Morning Worship period and on the following Sunday, February 27, at 9:00am during the Sunday School period.   
 
During the 10:00am Morning Worship period on February 27, Fairview will present its inaugural “Spirit of the Community Award” to former African American elected officials and civil rights leaders who have been trailblazers in their respective fields.   Honorees are:  Senator E. Melvin Porter, Judge Vicki Miles LaGrange, Senator Angela Monson, Representative Kevin Cox, Representative A. Visanio Johnson, Mrs. Shirley Darrell, Mayor Leroy Richardson, Mayor Alma Pringle, Mayor Lewis Pringle, Mayor Marsha Jefferson, Mayor Eddie Jackson, Mrs. Willa Johnson, Mayor Earnest Ware, Mrs. Clara Luper, Mrs. Thelma Parks, Mr. Joe Clytus, Mr. Alonzo Jones, Mr. Roosevelt Milton, Mr. Leonard Benton, Dr. Ernest Holloway, and Judge Charles Owens. 
 
Dr. Eric Anthony Joseph, Vice President for Strategic Initiatives at Mid America Christian University in Oklahoma City, will be the preacher for the Morning Worship.  Dr. Joseph formerly served as Associate Dean and Chaplain of the Drs. John William and Annie Laurie Coleman Heritage Center at Langston University in Langston, Oklahoma. He began his full-time faculty responsibilities in August 1997. He also served Langston’s President as an executive administrator for special assignments.  He has vast educational experience and applicable experience in the area of Christian education and cultural diversity.  He earned a Doctorate of Philosophy in Intercultural Education, a Master of Divinity in Biblical Exposition, a Master of Arts in Christian Education and a Bachelor of Arts in Communications, all from Biola University in LaMirada California.  Special music for the morning service will be by Sister Anita Blanton. 
 
The month’s events will conclude with the Annual Black History Fellowship Service on Sunday evening, February 27, at 6:30 p.m.  This is a joint worship with Fairview and OKC First Church of the Nazarene congregations.  Rev. Jon Middendorf, Senior Pastor of OKC First, will bring the message.  Rev. Middendorf  teaches Theology in the Religion Department at Southern Nazarene University.  He is an accomplished and in-demand speaker and author, and most recently served the General Church of the Nazarene as the Consultant and Coordinator of Big Picture Youth Ministry Training. Music will be provided by OKC First Music Ministry, along with the traditional Song of Fellowship, song jointly by OKC First and Fairview’s choirs and the congregation.  A fellowship dinner will be served immediately following the service.
 
Fairview is located at 1700 N. E. 7th Street in Oklahoma City.  Dr. J. A.
