Focus on the Family

By M. Patterson |  September 3, 2013

Dr. J. A. Reed, Jr., Senior Pastor at Fairview Missionary Baptist Church, has declared the month of September as Family Month.  Emphasis will be placed on the family throughout the month through Gospel proclamation, study periods, and various events.

On Sunday, September 1, Senior Pastor Reed set the stage for the month during 10:00 a.m. morning worship, preaching on “The Ministry of Parenting,” I Timothy 3:4-5; Psalm 78:1-7.  September 8 is Grandparent Day.  A special tribute will be paid to grandparents with a program during the Sunday School hour.  Rev. Derrick Walter, Sr., Assistant Pastor, will bring the message for 10:00 a.m. worship.
All seniors, 60 years of age and over, will be recognized on Sunday, September 15, which is designated as Senior Saints Day.  Seniors will have reserved seating and Dr. Reed will preach a special message.  The seniors will be treated to lunch in the Donald Burns Fellowship Hall and Educational Center immediately following morning worship.

Wednesday night, September 11, the focus will be on youth and teenage pregnancy prevention.  LaNita Harris, MPH, CHES, Teen Pregnancy Prevention Specialist with the Oklahoma City-County Health Department, will do a special presentation, “More Than Just ‘The Talk’,” centering on how to speak to teens about making healthy, responsible reproductive choices, including how to be abstinent.  LaNita will be followed by Pastor Reed who will impart the Christian standpoint on the subject:  what we believe and why we believe it.  There will be an opportunity for discussion and questions.  Youth, parents, and any trusted adult role model is encouraged to be present.  The event will begin at 7:00 p.m. and will be held in the D. Burns Fellowship Hall.

September 20 - 22, the Family Enrichment Ministry is spearheading the Annual Singles and Married Couples Conference and Retreat.   The theme is “What’s Love Got to Do With It? Everything!”  The meditation scripture is I Corinthians 13.

The Conference will begin Friday at 8:30 a.m. with registration and breakfast in Fairview’s Fellowship Hall.  Following teaching and discussion sessions and lunch, the group will travel to Fin and Feather Resort, Gore, Oklahoma, for the remainder of the Retreat.  Friday evening and Saturday morning’s agenda will include breakout discussion and class sessions, recreational periods, a cookout and free time.  On Saturday evening, the schedule includes a banquet followed by music and fellowship.
After breakfast on Sunday morning, the retreaters will return to Oklahoma City to be a part of the church’s Annual Family Day celebration.

Family Month will conclude with Family Day on Sunday, September 22.  Rev. Manuel Scott, Jr., of Manuel Scott, Jr. Ministries, Inc., Los Angeles, California, is guest preacher for the 10:00 a.m. worship period.  Rev. Scott is a full-time evangelist and author.  Evangelist Scott is believed to be the first Seminary-trained, full-time evangelist coming out of the Black Baptist Church.  Information on Rev. Scott can be viewed on his website at www.manuelscottjr.org.
