OKC Host National Conference

NBC Western Region Conference Scheduled

Dr. Julius R. Scruggs, President of the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc., and other national and state officers and lay persons, will be in Oklahoma City, May 10—12, 2010, for the National Convention’s Western Region Conference.  The Western Region is currently constituted by the states of Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Kansas, Nevada, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Utah, and Washington.
 
The Oklahoma Baptist State Convention, Dr. C. W. Whitlow, President, and the East Zion Consolidated District Association, Rev. J. L. Mitchell, Moderator, will host the Conference with Fairview Baptist Church serving as host church.  Dr. J. A. Reed, Jr., Senior Pastor at Fairview and Vice President over the Western Region of the National Convention, is Chairman of the Conference Planning Committee.  
  
The Crowne Plaza Hotel, 2945 N. W. Expressway, will be the Conference Headquarter.  Auxiliaries that will be meeting during the Conference are the Woman’s Auxiliary, the National Laymen’s Movement, Ushers and Nurses Auxiliary, Prison Ministry, National Congress of Christian Education, Pastors and Moderators.  All day sessions of the Conference will be held at the hotel with registration beginning at 8:00 a.m. and the meetings starting at 8:45 a.m.  The three night sessions will be held at Fairview, 7:00 p.m. nightly. 
 
 “This session will be spent in developing a philosophy of administration and structure to guide our Region in implementing the ministry of our National Convention in our State Conventions, District Associations and Churches,” stated Vice President Reed.  “We will use these two days dialoging with our State Presidents, Moderators and Pastors, exchanging ideas and opinions on how we can effectively communicate the ministry of our Convention to our churches.”
 
The Conference will begin with a Pre-Conference Musical at Fairview on Monday night at 7:00 p.m.  The choir, made up of singers and musicians from across the state, is under the direction of Velina Davenport, Oklahoma Baptist State Convention Music Director.  Choir rehearsals are currently being held at Fairview with remaining rehearsals set for April 26, May 3 and 9 at 7:00 p.m.
 
On Tuesday night, National Convention President, Dr. Julius Scruggs, will address the Conference body and will bring the evening worship message.  Wednesday night’s message will be brought by Dr. Claybon Lea, Jr., Assistant Vice President of the Western Region and President of the California State Baptist Convention.
 
“We are honored to have a person of Dr. Scruggs’ standing willing to come to Oklahoma and share with us in this Conference,” continued Dr. Reed.  “He oversees a Christian body of around 8 million members so we’re pleased that he’s taking time out of his schedule to come and personally share his vision for the Convention with us.”
 
Registration for the Conference is $100 for state conventions, $75 for district associations, $50 for churches, and $25 for individuals.
